Thu Jun 4 : AMT Day 6 [ride] Carcassonne → Andorra (4h30m 225km)
Feeling a bit better after a restful day in Carcassone.
We had an especially good breakfast museli and nuts.
Then quick pack up and down to the bikes, parked on the sidewalk for the briefing, then out of
the city early to beat the rain into Andorra.
Coffee stop at Le Terminus in Quillan — nice stop with two nice dogs. Chonky dog!
Then the group split into two groups: one direct (3 bikes), and another over a 1980 meter pass (Col de Pailhères near Pic de Fontargent) with very narrow, tight switchbacks (D25).
We had a break in Ax-les-Thermes where we split up to each find our own lunch option. We found a "homemade lunch" at La Table du Sud in Ax-les-Thermes.
After lunch, we had another climb to 2400m in fog. The fog near the top of the mountain was really thick, so we turned around and took the tunnel across the border into Andorra. On the other side, we rode back up towards the top where it was mostly clear of fog. Right at the top, at the fog line, we got cheap(?) gas in Andorra €1.57 at the top rather than typical €2.00. By the way, €1.57 is $6.78/gallon --- when I got back in July gas was $4.45/gallon in Vancouver WA.
After fueling up, we took the long route into the city.
We checked in and then Kathi and Chris walked around. We found the place Jerry and Chris stayed May 24, 2019.
