I was hoping to work my way through the Åland islands between Stockholm and Helsinki.
Something called The Finnish Archipelago Trail (Saariston Rengastie) exists.
The Ålandstrafiken Tourist Pass €60 offers unlimited car travel on paid inter-island archipelago ferries for nine consecutive days. Nine consecutive days from purchase. Coverage: Paid local routes like the Southern Line (Långnäs–Galtby) and Northern Line (Hummelvik–Torsholma). But, does not cover major commercial cruise-ferries from Sweden or mainland Finland (such as Viking Line, Tallink Silja, or Eckerölinjen).
This sounded great until I tried to actually work out how to do this in early September. The ferry schedules become more limited after about Aug 25, and on some days, some of the ferries don't run at all or have abbreviated routes. Also, the intermediate islands have very limited lodging opportunities, especially on the nights where no ferry is operating and people are stuck there for another day. Those days are booked solid. So, the northern route (see below) is infeasible without camping, and the southern route is only feasible if you don't get off at any intermediate stops for exploration. That makes it equivalent to an overnight ferry, except you spend a full day on the boat. I would potentially get sea-sick and have to pay for two more overnight lodgings without actually exploring any islands. I gave up on this plan and I'm going with an overnight from xx → yy followed by some back-tracking for exploration by scooter.

– Korpo – Houtskär – Iniö – Kustavi – Naantali – Turku. is 233 km and takes 8 hours if you
don't stop and all the ferry times line up.
In practice, people do this in 3--5
days.
I think I could do this in 3 days. First night on Fasta, Second in Kustavi on Vartsala or
Kivimaa, Third on Nagu, then Fourth in Helsinki
The state of AI in August 2026 is not quite good enough to actually plan an itinerary. To start my island hopping, I need to ride my motorcycle north of Stockholm to Grisslehamn to catch a short ferry across the Sea of Åland.
Ride 30 Minutes to Mariehamn. The most practical solution is to make the dark 30-kilometer (30-minute) ride west to the capital city of Mariehamn, where actual 24-hour check-ins can be arranged. The Hotels: You can book well in advance at properties like Park Alandia Hotel or Hotel Arkipelag. Crucial Rule: You must notify the hotel in advance that you are arriving at 2:30 AM or 3:00 AM so they do not mark your reservation as a "no-show" and can accommodate a late-night key collection or automated check-in code.
2. Rent a Cabin Nearby (Svinö)The absolute closest lodging to Långnäs is Svinö Stugby, which is only about 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) away from the ferry dock. The Setup: They offer small cottages/cabins. Check-In Strategy: Like Mariehamn, you must arrange the late-night key collection via a keybox or lock code with the owners ahead of your arrival. You will not find an open reception desk here at 2:00am.
Once on the Åland Islands, I will traverse the islands using the local inter-island commuter ferries operated by Ålandstrafiken.
