If you enjoy the performing arts, check the schedule at the Finnish National Opera and Ballet. Even if you don't catch a show, the building is situated beautifully on Töölönlahti Bay. Alternatively, you can view the exterior of Finlandia Hall, an iconic conference center designed by the famous Finnish architect Alvar Aalto.

Temppeliaukio Church (Rock Church)

After your morning exploring Senate Square and Suomenlinna, head to the Töölö neighborhood to see one of Helsinki’s most unique architectural marvels. The Temppeliaukio Church was carved directly out of solid bedrock. The interior is stunning, with rough stone walls and an incredible copper-lined dome. The acoustics are also phenomenal.

Senate Square, a beautiful example of neoclassical architecture and one of the oldest parts of central Helsinki. It features the iconic, white Helsinki Cathedral, which is a must-see landmark.

Suomenlinna (on a future visit with Kathi)

Take the quick, 15-minute ferry ride from Market Square to Suomenlinna. This 18th-century sea fortress built on a cluster of islands is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a wonderful place to walk around, see the old cannons, and take in the maritime views.
