2025 AIS-5 Quintuple Quest, Wed January 08, 2025

We spent part of the day visiting the embassy of Sierra Leone (everyone was taking the day off) and Guinea (they assured us the eVisa was going to be fine).

A few more errands collecting T-shirts and some donations / sponsorships, then back to the shop to hang out.

I went out for a walk around the neighborhood around Robust Engineering and the New Town Road market. I changed $50 to cedi and bought a 12v lighter socket USB charger for about a dollar. The energy level in the markets is amazing. Streets are not in good shape with open sewers that a bike could easily fall into. Pay attentition when walking around. I did feel safe even when walking on some almost deserted back streets. It was pretty hot in the sun, maybe 35°C with high humidity in strong sunlight. I wasn't motivated to do a lot more exploring.

Dan sent me on a little loop around the block as a test which I passed OK. At about 5:30pm, he sent me through Accra rush hour traffic back to my hotel. Wow, that was a trial by fire! Fortunately I passed Dan's test and gained his confidence that I would ride with the group.

In the evening Joseph took me to a party with some of his friends that join him on various road trips. There I met a bunch of Ghana elites, lawyers and such. Several really interesting, intellectual conversations. I'd like to spend more time with these folks.

Visiting embassies

We visited the embassies of Sierra Leone and Guinea in an effort to change my eVisas into actual passport stamps on the advice of Sthe. He encountered problems with his eVisa at some country (Camaroon?) and said that remote, road border crossings sometimes did not have the equipment to look up eVisa validity. It turns out this was not a problem. On the other hand, having a phone number from someone at the embassy of Sierra Leone on a postit on my eVisa printout seemed to short circuit some kind of objection at that border crossing. It might be useful in general to put a postit with the consular phone number on it on your eVisa printout. Interesting hack.

Out for a walk around the neighborhood

An Exclusive Party

In the evening, Joseph took me to an exclusive party at the home of a business man who runs a mobile phone network. Several of the people at this party are friends of Two Spare Tires and recently joined him for a road trip up the East Coast of the USA. Vaguely analagous to what I'm doing... a motorcycle road trip from Accra to Dakar... with Joseph.
