We left SR Suites hotel in Chapala at 9:00am and spent a couple of
hours on toll highways. Pretty, but not twisty. Our first rest stop
was at an open air museum highway pullout overlooking Tequila. Then
we drove past the town of Tequila and up into the mountains on a
really nice, unnamed road. We passed a dam and ascended to the Mirador Barranca de Tequila desde La sierra de El Salvador
overlook with magnificent views. Then back down into the town of
Tequila. Since the day ended early, I attempted to ride to the top of
Volcan de Tequila. The road looked good on the map, but it was very
roughly paved with cobblestones. Too much for the BMW R1150R's
suspension. In fact, I think I damaged the bike by loosening the
headlight and bouncing a bolt out of the fuel filler door assembly.
Looking at the GPS on the pictures I took, it seems I didn't even make
it as high as the highway 15D crossing. I did see several families
hiking towards the top of the volcano. Later that evening, Jerry and I walked around the town and down Jose Cuervo aka
Fábrica La Rojeña,
the main street of the Cuervo Tequila factory.
I really have only a vague idea of our route this day, so take this map with a grain of salt.
I attempted to ride up to the top of Volcan de Tequila on a cobblestone road. It turned out to be too rough for the BMW R1150R, so I turned back after a few km.
The views from the Volcano were spectacular.
