Narative

Short ride to Hungary where the border was unattended. Pavement changed abruptly.

And there were lots of dogs. None of them chased me, but there are lots of off-leash dogs and puppies on the roads.

Really poor area in Northern Hungary near Slovakia. Some of the towns are really poor.

Pavement was really rough in places. Patches on the patches on the patches until the road is just a bunch of bumpy asphalt.

But the greenery was awesome.

Farms are nice.

The Hungarian language is like nothing else. No guess about pronounciations and no familiar roots.

Stopped for coffee and the girl spoke English. Said one of my cash bills was old and no good 500ft.

But my payment card worked fine.

Saw some kind of astronomical observatory in the mountains.

Lots of really nice riding. Quite varied.

Getting into Budapest was a long, hot slog.

Parked on the sidewalk in an alley behind a statue near the hotel. A bit sketchy, but it worked out fine.

Good hostel with really nice private room, but expensive.

My room was "101 THE DUDE".

Walked around a bunch, took lots of pictures, found a good dinner. Had Hungarian Goulash in Hungary.

The baked goat cheese and bulgar with pine nuts was really good. Fried cottage cheese dumplings with sour cream and strawberry desert. Yum!

Lots and lots of river cruise boats tied up in the Danube river.

Budapest is huge and I think I was getting tired, because I don't remember liking it that much, even though the pictures and food and room were all good. I need to come back some time with a few days to spend and be more relaxed.

Stopping in the town of Edelény for coffee

Edelény was the first largish town since crossing the border into Hungary and my first purchase in Hungary.
My payment card worked fine. The waitress spoke English and told me one of my old Forint cash bills was "old and not good anymore".

Buying a highway vingette

Astronomical Observatory Bükki Csillagda

The Bükk Mountains and the Bükk Plateau, is the area with the highest average height in Hungary, which, together with its very little light pollution, is especially suitable for night observations. The observatory is at 635 meter altitude. Historical information.

The roads up here were fantastic!

Heading down, out of the park

Roadside picnic lunch

2.5 hrs to Budapest and the traffic into Budapest is already looking a little slow.

Hostel in Budapest

The ride into Budapest was long, hot, and tedius traffic. I didn't arrive in the best mood. But the hostel (Maverick Hostel and Apartments) was really nice and right in the center of downtown.

The hostel proper is at the end of this huge room. You go through a couple of electronically locked doors to get here. Luckily I was able to follow some other folks in to the check-in desk.
The guy at the desk, Tibor, was helpful telling me I could park my motorcycle on the plaza walkway in the alley next to the building, out of sight near a statue. Worked out great.

My room is well named!

Out for a walk around Budapest

Dinner is an authentic Hungarian Goulash in Budapest Hungary!

The baked goat cheese and bulgar with pine nuts was really good. Fried cottage cheese dumplings with sour cream and strawberry desert. Yum!

Some more walking around, back to the Hostel

My motorcycle parking spot. Security based on the idea that if nobody sees the bike, nobody will try to steal the bike.
But if someone does want it, there's nobody to disturb them while they take it.
Sleep well!
