view from my room before breakfast and my ride across Gotthard Pass back to Zug

Lots of granite quarry on the way towards Gotthard

This is one of the six boring heads that carved the hard rock sections (~80%) of the Gotthard tunnels 2002--2007 (so-so youtube documentary about the Gotthard Tunnels project)

The motors to turn this thing where 3.5MW. Apparently her name is Heidi

I learn later today at the Swiss Museum of Transport that this is called a rotary chisel

Panorama San Gotthard, a good spot to stop for a photo

notice the old road is all cobblestones

Old pass road is closing for a classic car race. But a sympathetic policeman let me drive down for 10 minutes then turn around. At my turn-around point, a less sympathetic policeman almost made be go all the way back down. But it was nice to ignore him and continue riding back up the old road.

A bitchin' road

This is heading down the north side of Gotthard pass towards Lucerne

sitting down for lunch at Auslandschweizerplatz on Vierwaldstattersee AKA Lake Lucern

The ferry is interrupting my lunch time view

Switzerland has its share of toothie mountains

and I think I see a glacier in there under the clouds

In Switzerland, you follow the rules and pay for your parking

that will buff out

Now I know why I was so hot inside the Gotthard tunnel when I drove through it back in 2016. The rock itself is as warm as 46°C

a common structural element in Europe is the steel mesh box full of rocks. On Krk island in Croatia, I saw a whole house made this way. Sorry I didn't get a picture of that.

Check out this innovative use of a Vespa scooter for lake transport
