Day 3, Tuesday Jan 28, Tequila to San Blas

We left our Tequila hotel at 9:00am and had an extraordinary day of riding in the twisty roads of Highways 15 and 76. At about noon, Dave disappeared from my mirrors. He had been following pretty closely, so I paused for him to catch up. After a few minutes, our guide went back for a look. I followed a few minutes later. Dave was banged up, but not seriously hurt. The bike however looks pretty much totaled. The engine and front suspension may be the only parts reusable. A Mexican Angle named Alejandro stopped with his pickup truck to rescue the bike and Dave. He drove them down to the hotel in San Blas.

I really have only a vague idea of our route this day, so take this map with a grain of salt. Also, my camera sometimes lies about GPS locations and the only picture I have at the crash site has a bogus position. So I guessed the approximate location of the crash until I can get a better picture from Jerry or ...

Rest stop on the highway shortly after leaving Tequila.

We were going at a nice, fast-comfortable pace. Dave was following me closely and seemed to be doing pretty well. But then he disappeared from my mirrors and I got worried. Dave Berney stopped and I asked him to go back to have a look. After a few minutes I went back too. I didn't get pictures of the bike down or of Dave's injuries, but here's the bike in Alejandro's truck. Mexican people are extremely ready to help.

Back at the hotel, I got some pictures of damage to the bike.

Damage to the bike was pretty extensive -- I think the swing arm was cracked. Fortunately Dave was only a little scraped up and nothing broken.

The hotel called a doctor who made a house-call when his shift ended at the local hospital. He cleaned Dave up, gave him a Tramadol and some antibiotics and bandages and generally checked him out. Total cost 500 pesos, about 27 dollars. Mexican medical care is vastly superior to the United States in a price/performance ratio sense. Also in convenience.

Saw this sign in a pharmacy where we bought more antibiotics for Dave.

Iglesia Antigua is a very old church in San Blas

This little chihuahua wanted to kill me for taking his picture.

So many groups of 2, 3, and even 4 people on a scooter.
